How to Add Govee Lights to Apple HomeKit (2025 Guide)

Govee LED strips and bulbs don't support HomeKit natively. This guide covers the HomeBridge method, the Govee Matter update status, and the best alternatives for native HomeKit lighting.

Does Govee Support HomeKit?

Govee does not natively support Apple HomeKit on most of its LED strips, bulbs, and light panels. Govee has focused its ecosystem integrations on Alexa and Google Home, where the vast majority of its customers are. HomeKit support would require Govee to go through Apple's MFi certification process and develop a HomeKit firmware stack — a significant investment the company has not made for most products.

Some newer Govee products have been announced with Matter support, but as of 2025, Matter-certified Govee devices are limited to a few models. The HomeBridge method remains the most comprehensive way to get all Govee devices into HomeKit.

Method 1: HomeBridge with homebridge-govee

With a running HomeBridge server, search for 'homebridge-govee' in the Plugins tab. Install it, then configure it with your Govee account credentials (email and password, or the API key from your Govee account settings — the API key method is preferred for stability).

After restarting HomeBridge, your Govee devices will appear in the Home app as light accessories. You can control on/off, brightness, and color temperature. RGB color control is supported for color LED strips, but some dynamic effects (like Govee's 'music mode' or pre-programmed scenes) are Govee app-only features not exposed through HomeKit.

Getting Your Govee API Key

Open the Govee app on your phone, go to Profile → Settings → About Us, then tap on the app version number repeatedly until 'Developer Mode' appears. Enable it, then go to Apply for API Key. The key is emailed to you within a few minutes.

Using the API key instead of your account password makes the HomeBridge integration more stable — password-based auth can fail when Govee updates their login flow, while API keys are more resilient to app updates.

Govee and Matter: Current Status

Govee has announced Matter support for select products but rollout has been gradual. The Govee Matter lineup as of 2025 includes some newer LED strips and bulbs — check the Govee website or the product listing for the Matter badge. Matter-enabled Govee devices would work natively with HomeKit without any HomeBridge.

If HomeKit compatibility is important to you, check HubMatch before buying any new Govee product to see whether it has native HomeKit or Matter support.

Better Alternatives for Native HomeKit Lighting

If you want HomeKit lighting without HomeBridge complexity, Nanoleaf and Philips Hue are the strongest alternatives. Nanoleaf Essentials bulbs and light strips support Matter natively and are very affordable. Philips Hue requires the Hue Bridge but has native HomeKit support across its entire range and the widest selection of form factors.

For pure LED strip use cases similar to Govee, the Nanoleaf Essentials Light Strip works directly with HomeKit via Matter and covers most of what Govee's strips do for dynamic room lighting.
